“What makes you think the ocean was the cause of your death?” asked Robert.

“If not that, then why would it constantly be in my dreams? That fear, the intense and exhausting suffering that I experienced each time I dreamed of it—I see no other reason. If it is true that the leap happens at a time when one’s life hangs by a thread, I think that in my case it was something related to the sea. If it took me a year to die, there’s a good chance that I slipped into a coma for causes that could be related to drowning or, maybe, an embolism during a scuba dive. I couldn’t come up with another explanation, and, at this point, I would rather not have to wonder anymore.”

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to rip open your wound.”

Jack leaned back with his elbows on the table. “It’s not a problem. Your turn. Tell me about your nightmares.” He stared Robert straight in the eye.

“I dream of a woman and a young man,” he began. “I also dream of a homeless guy. He’s always standing on the same street corner. The other night he even stretched out his hand to me. When I dream of the woman I feel anger, pain, and regret. The young man, on the other hand, is always crying. He’s been sobbing like a child in all my dreams. He talks to me, but I can’t hear what he is saying. We try to touch each other. We stretch out our hands, but nothing. I can’t feel him. There’s only silence. Whereas when I dream of standing on that street corner, noises get amplified around me and smells get stronger. You know, people’s voices, horns honking. Even the sharp smell of exhaust from the cars.”

As Robert spoke, Jack listened intently, as if he was trying to catch some clues that could help to identify the things Robert had left behind in his previous life, those good things that he had lost and failed to keep from his previous dimension. Any detail that might indicate that he too had been in a coma or something similar.

“Do you recognize the two people you see in your dreams?” asked Jack.

Robert frowned. “No.”

“I think in order to reconstruct what you experienced, who you were, what kind of life you were leading before the leap, you’re going to have to undergo what I call the emotional test.”

“What is that?” asked Robert, intrigued.

“I have learned to understand something about my parallel life,” said Jack, as he sought a more comfortable position in his chair, “by analyzing my emotions in this one when faced with situations. For example, I know I wasn’t rich before or, at least, nowhere near as rich as I became when I woke up.”

“How could you tell?” he asked, curious and captivated by the topic.

“Based on the fact that I was amazed and fascinated. Not only did everything seem new to me, but I felt I wasn’t used to that standard of living.
